language exchanges in medellin
Participating in language exchanges is a great way to meet people, practice Spanish and English, learn about Colombian culture, and become more comfortable communicating in Medellin, Colombia.
Here is some basic information about language exchanges in Medellin, to help you get started:
Medellin, Colombia belongs to the department of Antioquia. People from Antioquia, including Medellin, are commonly referred to as “paisas”.
Paisas are often known for being friendly, social, and conversational, which has helped make Medellin one of the most popular cities in Latin America for cultural interaction between locals, travelers, digital nomads, expats, and international students.
Language exchanges, commonly called “intercambios” or “intercambios de idiomas”, are social events where people practice different languages together, most commonly Spanish and English. These events are generally informal and conversational rather than structured like traditional language classes.
Most intercambios in Medellin take place at bars, restaurants, cafés, hostels, coworking spaces, and social venues, especially in neighborhoods such as El Poblado and Laureles.
Many participants attend not only to practice languages, but also to learn about other cultures, make friends, meet travelers, network professionally, and participate in Medellin’s international social scene.
Although Spanish and English are the most commonly practiced languages, other languages are often welcome depending on the event and participants attending that day.
In Colombian Spanish, it is common to hear informal expressions and slang such as ¿Qué más?, ¿Qué hubo?, parce, parcero, bacano, teso(a), berraco(a), dar papaya, and ¡Ave María!, especially in relaxed social environments.
When speaking with Colombians, many people initially use the more formal “usted” form, especially with strangers or older adults, while “tú” may become more common as people become more familiar with each other. In parts of Colombia, including Medellin, “vos” is also used from time to time in informal conversation.
One of the best ways to improve language skills is through regular conversation and real social interaction. Language exchanges allow participants to practice listening, speaking, pronunciation, slang, expressions, and conversational confidence in a more natural environment.
